
João Nunes Monteiro is a Portuguese actor trained at the Academia Contemporânea do Espetáculo in Porto and holding a BA in Acting from Lisbon’s Theatre and Film School.
He has worked on stage with directors including Victor Hugo Pontes, Nuno Carinhas, Sónia Baptista, and Miguel Fragata.
He made his feature film debut at sixteen in Aristides de Sousa Mendes (dir. Francisco Manso) and has since collaborated with Dennis Berry, Ivo M. Ferreira, João Nicolau, Zara Dwinger, and Vasco Saltão.
He played the lead role in Mosquito (dir. João Nuno Pinto), for which he received the Sophia Award for Best Actor in 2021. He also appeared in The Tsugua Diaries (dir. Miguel Gomes and Maureen Fazendeiro), which premiered at the 2022 Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and earned him a second Sophia Award.
In the same year, he was selected as a European Shooting Star at the Berlinale.
