Tijmen grew up in Mechelen, Belgium. From an early age, he was fascinated by storytelling. He studied Word Art at the Conservatory in Antwerp, where he developed a love for the stage and acting. He began screen acting in projects such as Professor T., Over Water, and the feature film Wij by Rene Eller. He worked with Michiel Dhont on the short film Poor Kids and appeared in Girl, directed by his brother Lukas Dhont. Girl won multiple awards at Cannes and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. On stage, Tijmen played leading roles in Angels in America by Olympique Dramatique and is currently starring in Long Day's Journey Into Night by Zuidpool. His first lead role was in Muidhond (Tench), for which he was nominated for a Flemish Academy Award. He followed this with lead roles in series such as De Kraak, Netflix's Two Summers, and the historical drama 1985. In film, he continued with Kom Hier Dat Ik U Kus (Becoming Mona) and Holiday by Michiel Dhont. His latest film performance was in Tori and Lokita by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, which won the 75th Anniversary Award at Cannes. Tijmen has also been nominated for a Magritte Award for Best Supporting Actor.
